The Liferay Foundation has just released patch 2026.Q1.6-LTS, which is available for the Free Tier and is expected to be the last LTS maintenance release of this quarter. This is not a marginal maintenance update – behind it are strategic decisions that project planners need to have on their radar.

Why this patch is relevant

The 2026.Q1 series is a Long-Term Support version with five years of support for subscribers. The patch release 2026.Q1.6 provides LTS customers with security and reliability updates that take effect immediately upon release. For Portalworks customers on the LTS path, this means a direct obligation to act: the patch will not be exported to the next quarterly release – this is the current stabilization cycle.

Structural upheaval with real implications

The central event of the 2026.Q1 version is the introduction of the new Liferay CMS – a modern, headless-oriented system that replaces several legacy tools. This leads to two scenarios in projects:

For existing implementations: The long-established CMS components (Publications, Web Content, Blogs, Documents & Media, Knowledge Base, Asset Libraries) are in maintenance mode as of 2026.Q1 – using Liferay CMS is the recommended direction. This does not mean immediate obsolescence, but it signals that future features and optimizations will flow into the new architecture. If you build content strategies on Asset Libraries or classic Web Content, you are investing in a phase-out technology.

For new projects: The new CMS is production-ready as of now – not beta. The new CMS system has moved from beta status to release status. This sends a clear signal: headless architectures and modern content modeling are no longer optional future scenarios, but the default path.

Recommended actions for projects

1. Upgrades of existing systems: Before upgrading to 2026.Q1.x, evaluate carefully which traditional CMS features are active in your solution. In terms of timing, 2026.Q1.6-LTS is the optimal upgrade target – stable with patch support up to the next LTS milestone. The Liferay Foundation will no longer optimize at this feature level; do not wait for further patches in the old system.

2. Content migration: If you use Asset Libraries or classic Web Content, start evaluating Liferay CMS in parallel with your upgrade. Migration is a feasible process – the LTS base gives you three years for a well-thought-out modernization without panic.

3. New projects**: The starting point is 2026.Q1.6 with Liferay CMS directly. Headless is no longer an architecture debate here – it is the architectural foundation.

The fact that 2026.Q1.6 is the last Free Tier release of this quarter underlines the transition: from Q2 onward, free instances will only be able to access Q2.0. If you need LTS stability, you must use this Q1 milestone.

Portalworks is ready to plan upgrade strategies for your LTS roadmap and to shape the transformation to modern content architectures.
